The idea came from a group of local students two years ago. They noticed that the town centre had almost no green places where families could sit or children could play. The students collected two thousand signatures and showed them to the town council. After several meetings, the council agreed to remove the car park and use the space for a garden.

The park has a playground, a small lake and more than a hundred new trees. There are also benches, a few tables for picnics and a path for bicycles. In the middle, visitors can find a small stage where musicians will play on Friday evenings during the summer. Local farmers will also hold a market there once a month.

"At first I was against the plan," said Henry Brooks, who owns a bakery nearby. "But since the opening, I have had more customers than usual. People walk through the park and stop for coffee."

The mayor said that the project cost about 400,000 euros, and that part of the money came from a national fund for green cities. She also thanked the students. "They showed us that young people can change a town," she said.
