Will: decisions, offers, promises, predictions
A2 A2 grammar · lesson 5 of 25
Will is another way to talk about the future. You use it for decisions you make at the moment of speaking, for offers and promises, and for opinions about the future.
Form
will + base verb. It is the same for every person. The short form is ‘ll. The negative is won’t (will not).
| Positive | Negative | Question |
|---|---|---|
| I‘ll help you. | I won’t tell anyone. | Will you help me? |
| She will be fine. | It won’t take long. | Will it be cold? |
When do we use will?
Quick decisions (decided now)
‘The phone is ringing.’ ‘I‘ll answer it.’
I’m hungry. I think I‘ll have a sandwich.
Offers and promises
Your bag looks heavy. I‘ll carry it for you.
I won’t be late, I promise.
I‘ll call you tonight.
Predictions (what we think or believe)
We often use I think, I’m sure, probably and maybe.

People will probably live longer in the future.
Don’t worry. The exam won’t be difficult.
Will or going to?
Use going to for a plan made before. Use will for a decision made now. I’m going to visit Paris in May (I planned it). Oh, it’s cold. I’ll close the window (I decided now).
